Tear Gas Fails to Stop Sifuna’s Kakamega Rally
A political rally led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna in Kakamega County was briefly disrupted after police fired tear gas moments before he addressed supporters. The event took place at Amalemba Grounds on Saturday, 21 February 2026, under the banner of the “Linda Mwananchi” tour.
According to reports from the scene, tension rose shortly before speeches began, with officers moving in and lobbing tear gas canisters near the gathering. The move caused temporary panic as some supporters scattered for safety.
Despite the disruption, Sifuna urged the crowd to remain calm and not to retaliate. He repeatedly asked supporters to stay put and avoid confrontation, insisting that the rally would proceed peacefully. Other leaders present echoed the same message, calling for restraint and unity.
After a short pause, calm was restored and the rally continued as planned. Speeches resumed, with leaders addressing national politics, governance issues, and internal party matters.
The incident comes amid heightened political activity across the country as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Kakamega event has since sparked debate over public order management and the handling of political gatherings.
Migori County Politics will continue monitoring developments around political mobilisation and security responses across the region.
